Tryout - Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register for Tryouts?

    *  A Registration link is located on the Tryout Page of our website.  Please see the Age Definitions to determine which Age Group to register for.

How do I know what age group to register my daughter?

  • 2024-2025 Season Age Definitions

    • 18 and Under:Players who were born on or after July 1, 2006

    • 17 and Under: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2007

    • 16 and Under: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2008

    • 15 and Under: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2009

    • 14 and Under: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2010

    • 13 and Under: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2011

    • 12 and Under: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2012

    • 11 and Under: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2013

    • 10 and Under: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2014

The rule of thumb is how old will your daughter be on July 1, 2025? That is the age group she should sign up for.

Players who are eligible to play in 2 different age groups should have the conversation on which age group she should play. We will give insight on what we think is best for the athlete. It is ultimately your decision on what age group you choose.

Where are tryouts located?

    *  Tryouts and all CTX Juniors training is located at the CTX Fieldhouse - 2610 Main St. Buda, TX 78610

When Should I arrive?

   *   Players should try to arrive 20-30 minutes early prior to tryout time to check-in. We will measure height, reach and vertical BEFORE tryouts begin.

What do I bring?

    *  Players should wear volleyball attire including t-shirt, shorts, knee pads, and athletic shoes.  Players should bring a water bottle with plenty of water.

Are parents allowed to stay and watch?

   *  Tryouts are closed to spectators.  We ask that you accompany your athlete inside to ensure the Check-in process is completed properly. Parents will be allowed to stay in the lobby of the Fieldhouse, but are not allowed to be inside the gym or even in the upstairs viewing area.

How many athletes are on a roster?

  * We typically try to host 10-11 athletes on a team. we avoid putting 12 athletes on a roster as much as we can. Rosters are created by positions. We take in consideration athletes that are able to play multiple positions and what is ultimately best for the team.

What is involved in the Tryout process?

    *  Players will be evaluated by their top two position selections from registration through various position drills.  Players will then be placed in game situations to evaluate their leadership, competitiveness, and how they work with other players on the court.  Game play is very important to us at CTX Juniors so we will spend a lot of time in game type situations.

10's and 13's Team Placement Process

    * It is very difficult to judge younger athletes in a 3 hour time frame. Athletes in these ages are still learning the game of volleyball and growing into their athleticism. We understand that athletes potentially will look totally different in November, then as they do in June at Tryouts. Because of these factors, we will offer selected athletes into the program only. Then, we will host a 5 week clinic in the fall to further train and develop the athletes. At the conclusion of those trainings we will separate the athletes onto different teams.

When will I know if I made a team?

    *  Players will be notified of their status either the night of or the day after Tryouts for your age are completed. You will then have predetermined amount of time listed on the email to decide to accept or deny the offer presented. If you choose to accept, you must confirm your spot by registering  your athlete and making the non-refundable deposit. If we do not hear back within the allotted hours or the commitment fee isn't paid, the position will be given to another player.

    *  For players that are not offered a position on a team after the initial tryout, they will be placed on an Alternate status.  This may occur if we don’t have the number of players to fill an additional team or maybe too many of a particular position on a team.  We will hold a Supplemental tryout at some point after our initial tryout date to fill open positions in an effort to place an Alternate on a team.

How do I confirm my spot on a team?

    *  A player’s position on a team will be confirmed with their initial non-refundable deposit.  The deposit must be made within the designated amount of time of being offered a position on a team.  If the deposit is not made within the designated time, their position may be offered to the next player in line.

Need help with paying club fees? We offer fundraising!

  *  Club Volleyball is a financial commitment. We believe all athletes should have the opportunity to play Club Volleyball despite the cost. CTX Juniors is partnered with the University of Texas. Our families have the option to work UT events (sporting events as well as Moody Center events) all year long. Everything earned while working an event will go directly to your account. You can use the funds for monthly payments, Camps, Clinics and Lessons. Any family is welcome to sign up for as little or as many events as they wish. Multiple family members/friends can sign up to have funds sent to their athlete to earn more at once. We have multiple families who have paid off the entire season and future seasons. Funds never expire.  Fundraising funds CAN NOT be used towards the non-refundable deposit due at trouts.

What if I can't make the Tryout date?

   *  Your best option is to attend the actual tryout. This way we can evaluate your performance alongside others in your age group and make decisions in real time. However, we understand that sometimes things come up, so we have other options for you:

  1.  Schedule a private evaluation BEFORE tryouts

    • THIS IS YOUR BEST OPTION TO MAKE YOUR DESIRED TEAM. Athlete will be evaluated on all volleyball skills, similar to a private lesson. The best option here to schedule one before tryouts. Again, if you schedule after our tryouts we cannot guarantee there will be a position available for the team you want. We will contact you shortly after to let you know which team you've made.

  2.  Attend a supplemental tryout session AFTER tryouts

    • We will host supplemental tryouts later in the Summer and Fall depending on how many players/positions we need to fill certain teams. We cannot guarantee there will be a position available for the team you want. We will contact you individually to let you know which team you've made shortly after.

  3.  Schedule a private evaluation AFTER tryouts

    • Athlete will be evaluated on all volleyball skills, similar to a private lesson. The best option here to schedule one before tryouts. Again, if you schedule after our tryouts we cannot guarantee there will be a position available for the team you want. We will contact you shortly after to let you know which team you've made.

When are practices?

  *  Mizuno and Apex (National) teams will practice 3 days a week through February, Sunday evenings and two weeknight evenings. Sunday practices will mostly be a positional type practice. One weeknight practice will be a team practice and the other will be a ball control and scrimmage focused practice. Then they will drop their Sunday practices and continue with their two weeknights practices for the remainder of the season. After regionals all teams will take 1-2 week break before returning to practice to get ready for post season.

  *  Regional teams (Blue, Silver and White) will practice 2 days a week, Sunday and one weeknight. Both of these practices will be team focused practices with a few scheduled scrimmage type practices

  *  All exact practices days are TBD.
